Chapter 35 - Firepower

Amazingly enough, the D-Rex didn’t even kill anyone, at least in our neighborhood. Carlos had lost his leg, of course, and the woman who’d been hit by its first flame breath was now blind, bald, and missing large parts of her ears, but both would live.

The fires it started were a problem. Micah had come running up to me before the D-Rex was even dead, saying he’d been asked to join the firefighting teams. I’d hesitated, still seeing the giant monster thrashing on the ground in front of the fort, but given him my blessing when I heard he'd be in Clint's group. Micah had been working with Clint on forging armor all week, and I’d met him several times. I still didn’t know him well, but I trusted him to look out for my son.

"If you see another of these things, though, I want you to promise me, absolutely promise me, that you’re going to run straight back to the Fort."

"They won’t send another one at us. Not today," Micah said breezily. Then he’d glanced uneasily over the wall. "Right?"

"I don’t think they would, but apparently some spawned on the Arsenal at the same time we had this one appear here. Major Fitzgerald is still trying to reach out to the surrounding communities and see how common they were, and how many groups have been able to take them down. If one appeared over in Cotton Acres, for example, and they just ran away from it, I could see it coming after us next."

"Oh." Micah looked scared now.

I sighed. "You should be fine. You’re faster than a D-Rex, and they won’t be able to hurt you with their flames if you’re paying attention. You’ll be great at putting out the fires they started. Just run if you see one, okay?"

Micah nodded seriously and joined the team of adults waiting for him, one of several.

When the monster had finally died, its massive form dissipated just as easily as a tiny leafenrat’s did. It left behind an oblong gem, faintly glimmering, a purple so dark it was almost black.

A woman on the ground, one of a few people who’d been waiting just outside of melee range, rushed toward it. I Paralyzed her just as the gem itself whisked into the air and out of reach. I turned my head and saw Alexandra focusing on it. It moved toward her smoothly at first, but then the gem began wobbling in her mental grip.

"Hey!" I yelled to the group. "I don’t know who’s trying to take that from the mayor, but cut that shit out. We killed it as a group; we’re going to do our best to benefit from it as a group. Yeah, maybe you can steal the whatever-it-is. Maybe. But you better hope that whatever you get is worth more than living in the safest place in northern Alabama, because if you think we’re going to let you steal from everyone and keep living here, you have lost your damn mind.
